Historically, the Program Service Award was given to a volunteer who best embodied the YMCA character values of honesty, caring, respect and responsibility through service to the YMCA. As the YMCA movement began to focus on three areas of emphasis for our work, “Healthy Living,” “Youth Development” and “Social Responsibility”, our Program Service Award recipients typically are volunteers who embody the ideal that the Y is more than a gym, that we are a cause.
