LIFEGUARD CERTIFICATION

Lifeguard

YMCA of the USA’s research-based lifeguard training program provides a comprehensive, education-centered approach to preventing accidents in aquatic environments. It focuses on the practical aspects of what lifeguards need to know and on lifeguard and patron safety. Lifeguard training enables students to learn and apply safety principles in their own lives, develop leadership skills, learn how to maintain a healthy lifestyle and improve their decision-making skills.

Entrance requirements:

1. Be at least 16 years old

2. Take and receive certification in First Aid, Professional Rescuer CPR, AED, and Oxygen Administration

3. Pass the following skills tests (given at the first class)

a. swim 500 yards
b. tread water for a minimum of 2 minutes using only your legs
c. surface dive head first and feet first in 8 to 10 feet of water
d. swim under water for 15 feet
